You Say Tomato, I Say Grainger County

Posted by Karen Ritter

Summertime is in full swing and while I enjoy swimming and going to the beach, I am also missing the hills of Tennessee. We try to visit once a year to a small town in Grainger County where my husband's family comes from. Grainger County's claim to fame? TOMATOES. These tomatoes are famous throughout the region and also sold to markets in Canada, Mexico, and even Harrods in London! I didn't understand all the hoopla until I tasted one myself. Wow! The best tomato I have ever had.

Return to Cochabamba, Bolivia

Posted by Kimberly Geuder

This week I am heading back to Cochabamba, Bolivia for 10 days to an all boys Life Center (orphanage) with my family. We are very excited to be returning to Bolivia, especially since we found out that our work project will be helping build a car maintenance shed on the property, including digging a hole for a container to hold the old oil when the boys learn to change the oil.

MY DAD, MY HERO

Posted by Pat Atkisson

As Father’s Day approaches, we think of our Dads and how much we appreciate all they have done for us. My Dad was a very special man. I never fully realized until I was an adult how much he had to sacrifice for me, especially as a single parent of a 10 year old child.

Veterans On Central Florida Honor Flight Are Welcomed Home

Posted by Tammie King

Honor Flight is a national non-profit organization that honors America’s veterans for all their sacrifices by transporting them to Washington, DC to visit the various memorials dedicated to their service, as well as Arlington National Cemetery. These flights are done throughout the year and all over the country. The Honor Flight staff, volunteers and veterans from World War II, Korea and Vietnam make this trip to DC and back to their home city all in one day!

Although my husband and I could not go to DC with them, we did have the honor of welcoming these men and women home from one of the Central Florida Honor Flights last October. The majority of the vets that we welcomed home that night served during World War II, however, we did see one gentleman that had a hat indicating that he served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam, truly a dedicated serviceman!

Happy Armed Forces Day!

Posted by Sharon Thomas

With Armed Forces Day approaching (Saturday), it was suggested that I write a "Friday Feature" blog about having a son in the military. I contemplated what I might say, but decided that it would be difficult to write about that without sounding too sappy. Besides, my feelings can really be summed up in a very short phrase -- "immense pride" – which is more of a tweet than a blog. But, as the daughter, sister (of two) and mother of former and current members of the armed forces, representing the Air Force and the Army, I suppose I am qualified to offer some personal insights about what it's like to be part of a military family and comment on what I perceive as some common misperceptions.  These, of course, are my own views based on my personal experiences, which I understand may be far different from those of other military family members, many of whom have experienced unfathomable losses and suffering that I have fortunately not had to endure, but can only imagine. I do pray for them and hope that tomorrow everyone will spend a moment to honor them in your thoughts and prayers.
