In 1999, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopted rules to deter slamming and cramming by carriers and to help consumers gain a better understanding of their telecommunications bills. In 2012, to address a surge in cramming, the FCC required that landline carriers offer their customers the option to block third-party charges by making it clearly known on their website, on each bill, and at the point of sale.

Time for Step 5 Switched Access Filings!

Switched Access filing season is upon us again. ILECs recently made their annual access filings with the FCC - to be effective on July 1, 2016. We've been watching the step down toward bill-and-keep for terminating end office switched access rates over the last several years as a result of the FCC's ICC Reform Order.

HAPPY NEW YEAR - HERE’S YOUR ILEC RATE INCREASE!

The New Year started off with a wave of ILEC price increases that took effect in January. AT&T and Verizon were especially active in their regions. Verizon increased monthly rates for numerous business custom calling features and increased local exchange service rates for business customers in Pennsylvania.

VoIP Regulation: More than you thought?

As I participated in our product demonstration last week on the VoIP Requirements publication, I was reminded how diverse VoIP regulation is across the nation. The FCC and state regulatory agencies impose certain operational requirements, financial obligations, and reporting requirements on VoIP providers that can be challenging to track by jurisdiction.

ILEC Retail Rates - How high will they go?

Every week, I review filings from major carriers across the nation. As I summarize them for our monthly newsletter, inevitably the phrase that appears most often is “AT&T increased……” Every month, rate increases are filed somewhere that affect basic local service rates, optional calling plans, bundled offerings, or local toll. Did you know AT&T Illinois increased their local access line rate for business service three times in a 13-month period, taking the rate from $37.00 to $54.25 per month?

You Say Tomato, I Say Grainger County

Summertime is in full swing and while I enjoy swimming and going to the beach, I am also missing the hills of Tennessee. We try to visit once a year to a small town in Grainger County where my husband's family comes from. Grainger County's claim to fame? TOMATOES. These tomatoes are famous throughout the region and also sold to markets in Canada, Mexico, and even Harrods in London! I didn't understand all the hoopla until I tasted one myself. Wow! The best tomato I have ever had.
