FCC Open Meeting Summary 12/12/13 from Technologies Management, Inc.

At its December 12, 2013, Open Meeting, the FCC received a presentation from its Technology Transitions Policy Task Force. The Task Force said its immediate goal is to understand the impact of technology transitions, including the transition to an all-IP network, on consumers through diverse experiments and open-data initiatives. The Task Force said it is working toward an Order for consideration by the FCC in January that would:

FCC's Wheeler, "It's time to act with dispatch" on IP Transition

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler’s most recent blog post says “it is time to act with dispatch” on IP transition issues. According to his blog, the FCC’s Technology Transitions Policy Task Forcewill make a presentation at the FCC’s December 12, 2013, Open Meeting “with the expectation that the January meeting will include consideration of an Order for immediate action.”

FCC Plans 2nd Technology Transition Policy Task Force Workshop

The FCC’s Technology Transitions Policy Task Force announced it will hold a second workshop on IP Transition issues on Tuesday, October 15, 2013.  The workshop will focus on the consumer and competitive impacts of two key technology transitions: (1) the replacement of copper-based networks with fiber; and (2) the shift from wireline services toward greater use of wireless services.  The workshop will solicit data and analysis on the potential effects on residential and business consumers as well as the competitive marketplace when providers retire or discontinue copper-based services and replace them with IP-based fiber and/or wireless service.
