Chairman Pai’s theme for the July 16, 2020 Open Meeting is “Not Alone,” reflecting the agenda’s headline item which would adopt rules to make 988 the nation-wide 3 digit number to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.  But the agenda is far more diverse than the theme may suggest and contains many other items of importance to telecom providers.

House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation, and the Internet Chairman John Thune (R-SD), Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Greg Walden (R-OR), Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA), Subcommittee on Communications and Technology Chairman Mike Doyle (D-PA), and Ranking Member Bob Latta (R-OH) announced that they have come to an agreement in principle on legislation, the Pallone-Thune TRACED Act, to combat the robocall epidemic:

Pai speaks-1What will the FCC be tackling next?

Chairman Pai’s theme for the November 22, 2019 Open Meeting is “Protecting National Security and Public Safety.”  This is a reference to two of the items: one that would prohibit the use of any federal universal service funds to purchase equipment or services from a company that poses a national security risk and another that would adopt vertical location (z-axis) accuracy metrics for wireless calls to help first responders identify a 911 caller’s location in a high-rise building.

The FCC announced it had approved, with conditions, the transfer of control applications filed by TMobile and Sprint.  The FCC found that the transaction will help close the digital divide and advance US leadership in 5G, the next generation of wireless connectivity.

pai and FCC ShieldChairman Pai’s theme for the March meeting is “Behold the Ides of March,” a play on the famous Shakespearean warning to “beware the ides of March.”  This year, Chairman Pai is looking forward to the day saying that the FCC will “aim to make progress on many of the issues core to the FCC’s mission: promoting U.S. leadership on 5G, closing the digital divide, advancing public safety, modernizing our media rules, helping rural consumers, and more.
