2020 FCC SealFCC Adopts New Rules To Increase Use Of 4.9 GHz Spectrum Band

The FCC adopted rules permitting expanded use of 50 megahertz of mid-band spectrum in the 4.9 GHz (4940-4990 MHz) band that is currently underused.  Under the new rules, states are allowed to lease this spectrum to third parties to boost wireless broadband, improve critical infrastructure monitoring, and facilitate public safety use cases.

The FCC issued a Public Notice announcing the process by which Eligible Telecommunications Carriers (ETCs) must report the extent to which their networks contain or use potentially prohibited equipment or services provided by Huawei Technologies Company (Huawei), ZTE Corporation (ZTE), or their subsidiaries, parents, or affiliates, and the costs associated with removing such equipment and replacing it with equivalent equipment.

In Illinois, in a press release, the USDA Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced an investment of $9 million in four, high-speed broadband infrastructure projects that will create or improve rural e-Connectivity for 3,744 rural households, 31 businesses, 41 farms and a critical community facility in Tennessee.

The FCC has initiated the first of the rulemakings required by the TRACED Act.  Specifically, it is seeking comment on rules establishing a registration process for a single consortium to conduct private-led efforts to trace back the origin of suspected unlawful robocalls.
