FCC Announces Application Fee Increases

The FCC has announced new application fees to become effective 30 days after publication in the Federal Register. Application fee increases will impact Schedules of Charges for wireless, experimental radio, wireline, enforcement, international, international telecommunications and Homeland services.

Update on VoIP Numbering Trial: War of Words Continues

In our last episode of the VoIP Numbering Trial saga (November 13, 2013 post, Level 3 Reports Same Obstacles as Vonage in Numbering Trial), I reported that Level 3's VoIP affiliate, Level 3 ES, was unable to test call routing in the Denver market due to CenturyLink's refusal to allow its traffic to be routed via the existing Level 3 CLEC interconnection trunks. This was the same issue that Vonage raised with respect to its numbering trial in the Phoenix market, where CenturyLink is also the incumbent LEC  (November 6, 2013 post, VoIP Numbering Trial Off to a Slow Start).

To De-tariff or Not To De-tariff . . . . .

. . . .To the extent that it is optional, I can make a pretty strong case either way. Tariffs are still a great way to clearly establish the relationship between service providers and their customers. A tariff provides both parties with many protections that might be tricky to negotiate in the form of a contract. A tariff protects the carrier from certain liabilities and lawsuits. But tariffs can also be a drain on resources and a drag on product and pricing changes.

FCC's Revised Filing Deadlines: Q & A From TMI

The FCC has announced revised filing deadlines for documents due during the government shutdown.  Since parties did not have access to electronic dockets and other online FCC resources during the suspension of operations, the FCC extended the filing deadline for regulatory and enforcement filings to provide filers with access to FCC resources for the period they would have had absent the suspension of operations.  There are some exceptions.

FCC Government Shut Down Q & A From Technologies Management, Inc.

As we mentioned in "The Regulatory Mix" earlier today, we have provided  details and answered questions that our telecom regulatory consultants are being asked regarding the impact of the government shut down and the FCC. The FCC said that while it will not be open for normal operations during any government-wide shutdown, its Operations Center it may be contacted in the case of an emergency affecting the safety of life or the protection of property at 202-418-1122.

On August 30th, the Illinois Attorney General filed a lawsuit against a telecommunications company for allegedly switching several consumers' long distance providers without the proper authorization, a practice commonly known as "slamming."
