House Energy and Commerce Committee leaders wrote to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Ajit Pai and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chairman Joseph Simons asking that the two commissions stop work on all partisan or controversial items currently under consideration in light of the results of last week’s presidential election.

Senate Commerce Committee Introduces Data Privacy Bill; Announces Hearing on Current State of Broadband and Will Examine FCC Initiatives

First the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee announced the introduction of a new data privacy bill, titled the COVID-19 Consumer Data Protection Act. The legislation would provide all Americans with more transparency, choice, and control over the collection and use of their personal health, device, geolocation, and proximity data. The bill would also hold businesses accountable to consumers if they use personal data to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai announced the final agenda for the FCC’s December 12, 2019, Open Meeting.  It includes the following items: 

  • VoIP Symmetry – An Order on Remand and Declaratory Ruling that would promote continued investment in IP-based networks by clarifying that a local exchange carrier partnering with a VoIP provider may assess end office switched access charges only if the carrier or its VoIP partner provides a physical connection to the last-mile facilities used to serve the end user.
