FCC Authorizes Technology Transition Trials

At its January 30, 2014, Open Meeting, the FCC authorized “experiments” to measure the impact on customers of technology transitions in communications networks. This includes the transition from plain old telephone service (POTS) delivered over copper lines to feature-rich voice service using Internet Protocols, delivered over coaxial cable, fiber, or wireless networks. The trials could begin as early as June, 2014.

Give me your tired and poor……copper wire

I am not a Luddite and do not long for the days before computers, cable TV and VoIP. But Fran Martens, one of our senior analysts, is always sure to copy me on copper land line issues. She knows I am one of those people who cares about retaining this option. My other colleagues, within TMI and outside of TMI, assure me that I just need to get used to the idea that copper wires to our homes and offices will become obsolete when voice-as-an-application over broadband is the standard. Maybe the transition will take a decade or more – but obsolescence is assured nonetheless.

FCC Plans 2nd Technology Transition Policy Task Force Workshop

The FCC’s Technology Transitions Policy Task Force announced it will hold a second workshop on IP Transition issues on Tuesday, October 15, 2013.  The workshop will focus on the consumer and competitive impacts of two key technology transitions: (1) the replacement of copper-based networks with fiber; and (2) the shift from wireline services toward greater use of wireless services.  The workshop will solicit data and analysis on the potential effects on residential and business consumers as well as the competitive marketplace when providers retire or discontinue copper-based services and replace them with IP-based fiber and/or wireless service.
