Senate Commerce Committee Introduces Data Privacy Bill; Announces Hearing on Current State of Broadband and Will Examine FCC Initiatives

First the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee announced the introduction of a new data privacy bill, titled the COVID-19 Consumer Data Protection Act. The legislation would provide all Americans with more transparency, choice, and control over the collection and use of their personal health, device, geolocation, and proximity data. The bill would also hold businesses accountable to consumers if they use personal data to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

A recently enacted bill calls for the creation of a Commission to study the environmental and health effects of 5G technology.  The Commission’s study will include earlier generation technologies as well.  The purpose of the study is to examine the advantages and risks associated with 5G technology, with a focus on its environmental impact and potential health effects, particularly on children, fetuses, the elderly, and those with existing health compromises.
