Mississippi Charges Five Telemarketers for No-Call Violations
The Mississippi PSC announced that it has charged five companies that made 442 illegal calls. Should these entities be found to have violated the No-Call law, they are subject to a $5,000 per call fine; totaling $2,210,000. Notices of alleged violations were recently filed against the companies.

FCC Authorizes Connect America Fund Phase II Auction Support for 856 Winning Bids
The FCC announced that it has authorized $166.8 million in funding to expand broadband over the next decade to unserved rural homes and businesses in 22 states, representing the second wave of support from last year’s successful Connect America Fund (CAF) Phase II auction. Providers will begin receiving funding this month.

US Senate Oversight Hearing
Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., chairman of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, announced the committee will convene a hearing titled, “Oversight of the Federal Communications Commission,” at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 12, 2019. As part of the Committee’s oversight responsibilities, this hearing will examine policy issues before the Federal Communications Commission and review its ongoing activities and proceedings. All five FCC Commissioners are expected to testify.

FCC Announces Auction 102 Winning Bidders
The FCC announced the winning bidders in the auction of 24 GHz Upper Microwave Flexible Use Service licenses (Auction 102). The auction raised a total of $2,022,676,752 in net bids ($2,024,268,941 in gross bids), with 29 bidders winning a total of 2,904 licenses. The FCC also specified the deadlines for payments and the filing of long-form applications, and other post-auction procedures.

Chairman Pai’s theme for the June 6, 2019 meeting is “Blocking and Tackling Robocalls.” The centerpiece of the three-item agenda is a proposed declaratory ruling that, in the Chairman’s words, “would allow phone companies to implement strong call-blocking services as the default setting for their customers.” Instead of being offered call blocking on an opt-in basis, carriers could “block calls unless you affirmatively opt-out.

Pai Robocall Meeting in Oklahoma
Chairman Pai announced that he met with Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter to discuss robocalls and the state and federal governments response to combatting them. During his visit, Pai also met with Department of Corrections officials to tour a prison and talk about the tools the state prison system needs to combat contraband cellphones. He also visited a 911 call center and made a stop at the East Central Electric Coop in Okmulgee to discuss rural broadband deployment initiatives and the $22.2 million the company is receiving as part of the FCC’s Connect America Fund.
