US Senate Passes TRACED Act
In response to the Senate’s passage of the Telephone Robocall Abuse Criminal Enforcement and Deterrence (TRACED) Act, which targets illegal robocalls. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai and FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr each issued statements of support.
Chairman Pai released a statement saying, in part: “I commend the U.S. Senate for passing the TRACED Act and Senators Thune and Markey for leading this bipartisan effort. The TRACED Act would help strengthen the FCC’s ability to combat illegal robocalls, and we would welcome these additional tools to fight this scourge.

FCC Authorizes Funding for First CAF II Auction Winners
The FCC has authorized nearly $111.6 million in funding over the next decade to expand broadband to 37,148 unserved rural homes and businesses in 12 states representing the first wave of support from last year’s Connect America Fund Phase II auction. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai announced that he expects major phone companies to implement SHAKEN/STIR caller ID authentication standards this year, and he will host a summit on July 11, 2019 to examine industry’s progress toward meeting this deadline. The summit will focus on the industry’s implementation of the SHAKEN/STIR caller ID authentication framework and identify any challenges to deployment of the SHAKEN/STIR framework and discuss how best to overcome them.

FCC Denies 214 Authority to China-Owned Company
As expected, the FCC voted to deny China Mobile USA’s application to provide telecommunications services between the US and foreign destinations. This is the first instance in which Executive Branch agencies have recommended that the FCC deny a section 214 application due to national security and law enforcement concerns.
