Pennsylvania PUC Rejects Slamming Settlement

On February 6, 2014, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) rejected a settlement agreement between its independent Bureau of Investigation & Enforcement (I&E) and Pennsylvania Gas & Electric (PaG&E) over the company’s marketing practices. I&E alleged that an agent of PaG&E, along with an accomplice, switched 108 commercial electric and natural gas accounts without proper authorization. To make matters worse, PaG&E failed to self-report the violations to the Commission.

FCC Issues $3.56 Million Holiday Forfeiture - Slamming & Cramming

Just before the holidays, the FCC issued a number of Notices of Apparent Liability For Forfeiture to wireline and wireless carriers. The most interesting was the $3.56 million fine against Consumer Telecom, Inc. for engaging in deceptive marketing practices, slamming, cramming, and violating the FCC’s truth-in-billing rules by failing to clearly and plainly describe charges on telephone bills.

Third Party Verification as a best practice – What competitive energy companies can learn from the telecom industry

The easiest business decisions to make are the ones that are almost decided for you. Such was the case in 2000 when the FCC authorized telecom carriers to use third party verification (TPV) as a means to mitigate slamming issues. No need to decide whether or not to implement TPV – you just did it.

NARUC Considers Telecom Related Resolutions at Annual Meeting

The National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners is expected to consider three telecommunications-related resolutions at its annual meeting November 17 - 20, 2013. The resolutions address slamming, surveillance programs, and federalism. The draft resolutions will not become official NARUC policy until they are approved by the NARUC Board.
