The FCC’s Office of Economics and Analytics (Office) has reminded reminds mobile broadband service providers that their minimum advertised or expected speed data are no longer treated as confidential on FCC Form 477. As such, speed data will be included in the public releases of provider-specific coverage data, beginning with the December 2019 filing.

New York Proposal to Combat Robocalls
Governor Cuomo announced the 17th proposal of his 2020 State of the State Agenda - a comprehensive proposal to fight incessant robocalls or nuisance calls. The legislation will require telecommunications companies to deploy technology that allows customers to block suspected robocalls. As technology improves to identify and stop these nuisance calls, or robocallers try to find new ways to circumvent these efforts, telecom companies will be required to update their blocking technology to protect their consumers.

FCC Establishes New Digital Opportunity Data Collection
At its Open Meeting yesterday, the FCC voted to initiate a new process for collecting fixed broadband data to better pinpoint where broadband service is lacking. The FCC concluded that there is a compelling and immediate need to develop more granular broadband deployment data to meet this goal, and accordingly, created the new Digital Opportunity Data Collection. This new data collection that will collect geospatial broadband coverage maps from fixed broadband Internet service providers of areas where they make fixed service available.

A recently enacted bill calls for the creation of a Commission to study the environmental and health effects of 5G technology. The Commission’s study will include earlier generation technologies as well.
