court columnsCourt of Appeals Upholds Majority of FCC’s Restoring Internet Freedom Order 

In its decision the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia upheld the majority of the FCC’s 2018 Restoring Internet Freedom order with two exceptions.  First, the Court concluded that the FCC’s preemption barring states from imposing more stringent rules or requirements should be vacated.

FCC Commissioner Rosenworcel announced the release of a podcast episode celebrating the inaugural year of her Broadband Connections podcast series.  The podcast is dedicated to amplifying the voices of women from across the technology, innovation, and media sectors. Since launching the podcast one year ago, listeners have heard conversations about everything from ethical artificial intelligence to net neutrality to teaching girls to code and digital equity. Guests have included Senators, Congresswomen, teachers, coders, policymakers, advocates, and public servants—even an astronaut.

FCC Commissioner Rosenworcel announced the release of a special episode of her podcast, Broadband Conversations.  The episode was recorded in front of a live audience and features Congresswoman Sharice Davids and Congresswoman Abby Finkenauer. Both women serve on the Small Business Committee and both have also made history; Davids is the first openly LGBTQ Kansan elected to Congress and one of the first female Native Americans elected to Congress in our nation’s history.

The FCC announced that Chairman Pai has proposed adoption of new rules banning malicious caller ID spoofing of text messages and international calls.  The Commission will vote on these new rules at its August 1, 2019 meeting.

In a recent press release, U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) announced that they introduced new legislation to protect consumers’ private health data. “While recent reports have highlighted how home DNA testing kits and health data tracking apps have given companies access to unprecedented levels of consumer health data, current law does not adequately address the emerging privacy concerns presented by these new technologies.”

FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel announced the release of her latest Broadband Conversations podcast with her with her guest, Congresswoman Norma Torres—the only 911 operator serving in Congress. Congresswoman Torres spent 17 years as a 911 operator for the Los Angeles Police Department.  Rosenworcel said: “Before a whistle on a fire station blows, an ambulance races, or an air horn blares, it is a 911 professional who takes in a call and sets emergency response in motion.
