Today: AT&T Awarded FirstNet Contract, California Voice Options Program Open House, FCC Opens Broadband Deployment Proceeding, Nebraska Broadband Grant
AT&T Awarded FirstNet Contract
U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross and First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) announced that AT&T has been awarded the 25-year contract to build, maintain, and operate FirstNet’s nationwide public-safety network (NPSBN) dedicated to America’s first responders. AT&T will invest $46.5 billion into the FirstNet system. AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said his company is “ready to get started” with the network deployment of the FirstNet system. “We really are honored to work with FirstNet to build a network for America’s police, firefighters, EMS and first responders that is going to be second to none,” he said.
California Voice Options Program Open House
The PUC, Senator Jim Beall, the California Foundation for Independent Living Centers (CFILC), and the Silicon Valley Independent Living Center (SVILC) are hosting an Open House in San Jose to celebrate and give a demonstration of Voice Options, which offers iPads with speech applications at no-cost to people with speech disabilities. FCC Opens Broadband Deployment Proceeding
The FCC opened WC Docket No. 17-84, which is captioned “Accelerating Wireline Broadband Deployment by Removing Barriers to Infrastructure Investment.”
Nebraska Broadband Grant Award
The PSC awarded a $75,000 grant to Box Butte County from the Nebraska Internet Enhancement Fund (NIEF) for 2017. The grant will be used to help fund a project providing for the installation of fixed fiber leading to increased broadband service to 20 homes north of the city of Alliance.
