FCC’s Pai Convenes Stakeholder Meeting on Contraband Wireless Devices in Correctional Facilities

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai held a stakeholder meeting on 2/7/18 to address the threats posed by the use of contraband wireless devices in correctional facilities nationwide. In a statement released after the meeting, Pai specified the following:

“Our goal in convening this meeting was to bring together a diverse group to determine the most effective, affordable, and safe ways to address this problem—that is, to stop the threat of contraband cellphones without causing harm to legitimate wireless users. Today’s attendees showed a willingness to take active roles in helping us find a path forward. I’m particularly pleased that the wireless industry committed to taking on a more meaningful role. For instance, they’ve shown a willingness to work with government officials to test possible technological solutions and to participate in a task force that will continue today’s conversation with aggressive but achievable deadlines.

FCC Releases Voice Telephone Services Status Report

The FCC has issued the “Voice Telephone Services:  Status as of December 31, 2018” report. The Commission has used FCC Form 477 to collect subscribership information from providers of voice telephone services – the incumbent local exchange carriers (ILECs), competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs), and mobile voice providers – since December 1999. The Commission has required interconnected Voice over Internet Protocol (“interconnected VoIP”) service providers to report subscribership information since December 2008 because the use of VoIP technology is growing rapidly, and it increasingly is used to provide voice telephone service.
