Today's Regulatory Mix: Georgia Governor Announces Broadband Partnership, Minnesota PUC Issues Public Notice to RDOF Winners

In an effort to bring broadband access to unserved areas of Georgia, Governor Kemp announced that Central Georgia EMC and Southern Rivers Energy will form a new partnership with Conexon to provide high-speed internet to 80,000 homes and businesses in 18 middle Georgia counties.   Central Georgia EMC and Southern Rivers Energy are electric member cooperatives that own the fiber and will lease excess capacity to Conexon.  Conexon, a full-service fiber broadband provider, works exclusively with electric cooperatives to help design and build fiber networks. Conexon will provide the retail service to homes and businesses, managing account set-up, customer service and billing.

The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission issued a Notice to winners of the FCC’s Rural Digital Opportunity Fund that they must have their requests for Eligible Telecommunications Carrier (ETC) status, or necessary updates to existing ETC status submitted to the PUC by no later than February 19, 2021. Carriers that fail to file by the deadline run the risk of not having PUC approval by the FCC’s June 7, 2021 proof of approval deadline.
