California Broadband Funding

The PUC adopted Resolution T-17561, which approves funding in the amount of $450,000 from the California Advanced Services Fund (CASF) for the grant application of the Southern Border Broadband Consortium.  This project will further broadband deployment, access and/or adoption in the Southern region of California.  It will enhance public safety in the San Diego and Imperial County regions of California in the event of fire, flooding, and earthquakes.

Connecticut Small Cell Meeting

The PURA scheduled a technical meeting to be held on May 23, 2017, to discuss the processes and procedures that small cell antenna applicants or applicants of other similar technologies would follow when applying for permission to construct facilities in the public rights-of-way.  TMI Briefing Service subscribers see Briefing dated 4/6/17.

CTIA on Small Cell Infrastructure Deployment

The CTIA released a statement on the FCC’s role in small cell infrastructure deployment.  It says:  “The wireless industry is projected to invest $275 billion to deploy 5G small cell infrastructure, spurring job and economic growth in communities across the country. Modernizing that deployment is a race to the top for communities, and CTIA urges the FCC to act swiftly to remove barriers to infrastructure deployment. Prompt action and guidance from the FCC will serve as a critical step toward a better wireless future for both consumers and business.”  Click here for more industry data.

NANPA NAS Transition

The North American Numbering Plan Administration (NANPA) is targeting the end of April 2017 for the transition of the NANP Administration System (NAS) to the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud platform.  NANPA said that notification will be distributed to the industry.  The transition to the cloud platform will be transparent to NAS users.  After transition, NAS will operate in the same manner as it does today.  NAS user IDs and passwords will remain the same.  NAS functionality, to include the various queries and reports, will operate in the same manner.

US House Urges FCC To Hold ISPs To Their Privacy Promises

House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR), Communications, Technology Subcommittee Chairman Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection Subcommittee Chairman Bob Latta (R-OH) and 46 other Republican Representatives sent a letter to FCC Chairman Ajit Pai urging him to “hold ISPs to their privacy promises” until the FCC “rectifies the Title II reclassification that inappropriately removed ISPs from the FTC’s jurisdiction.”  The Representatives urged the FCC to adopt an regulatory approach that mirrors the one used by the Federal Trade Commission, saying: “[t]he authority vested to the FCC under Sections 201 and 202 of the Communications Act of 1934 charge the FCC with protecting consumers against unjust and unreasonable practices.  We believe this language provides the necessary authority to protect consumers in a similar manner to how the FTC protects consumers under its authority to prevent unfair and deceptive acts and practices.”
