alexander-hamilton.jpgHave you listened to the Broadway cast album for Hamilton yet? Or are you one of the lucky few that have managed to score tickets?

Even if you don’t like musicals, you really should give the cast album a listen. It’s not your grandmother’s musical where during a play the characters suddenly burst into song. The entire thing, every moment, is “wrapped” in clever word play and rhyming with the exception of one song.

Hamilton_on_the_10.jpgHamilton is clever, catchy and just plain fun. Listen to it with your kids. Both of mine are hooked (ages 16 and 12). Even my musical scoffing husband has been pleasantly surprised. It really is amazing. I’m convinced it’s a Broadway “game changer.” Much like Harry Potter was for young adult books and Star Wars for science fiction movies.

Although writer and star Lin-Manuel Miranda used some poetic license, the musical is mostly historically accurate and based on a 2004 biography of Alexander Hamilton written by Ron Chernow. What a fun way to learn American History.

hamilton_poster.jpgThe musical is sold out on Broadway, the cast album has already won a Grammy and its creator Miranda has even won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Hamilton is now up for a record number of 16 Tony Awards. I expect to hear “and the Tony goes to …Hamilton” quite a bit this Sunday night when the awards are handed out.

If you have Apple, Google Play, or Amazon Prime Music, you don’t need to buy the album. Access it online, download it to your smart phone and give it a listen. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Or better yet, tune into the Tony Awards telecast this Sunday night where I’m sure we’ll be able to not only hear some of the music, but catch a glimpse of some of the costumes, choreography and the many actors that have brought it all to life.

Click on this poster for a sample of the music from CBS news.
