FCC VoIP regulatory numbering trialThe FCC approves five VoIP number trial proposals. The 6-month trials will begin June 17, 2013 and will be conducted by Vonage Holdings Corp, SmartEdgeNet, LLC, WilTel Communications, LLC, Intelepeer, Inc. (formally VoEx, Inc.), and Millicorp.

Background:

Historically, interconnected VoIP providers have not been able to get direct access to telephone numbers but have had to obtain numbers through a traditional wireline local service provider. In April 2013, the FCC agreed to give Vonage and certain other VoIP providers direct access to numbers on a trial basis. The six-month trial is limited in scope and comes with several conditions. Among other things, participants have to offer IP interconnection to other carriers and providers, file publicly available monthly reports, and comply with established number utilization rules and practices.

We will post any developments here.
