NTIA Releases BTOP Quarterly Program Status Report

The National Telecommunications & Information Administration (NTIA) released its Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) Quarterly Program Status Report on July 23, 2013. The Report states that, as of March 31, 2013, 182 BTOP projects remained in active status and 42 BTOP projects were completed.

NARUC Telecom Task Force Releases Draft Report

The National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) Task Force on Federalism and Telecommunications released its draft report on 6/10/13. The Task Force is seeking to establish a stronger, more cooperative relationship between federal and State regulators to ensure that communications services remain reliable, affordable, and available to all.

FCC Seeks Comment On Technology Transition Trials

The FCC’s Technology Transitions Policy Task Force seeks comment on several potential technology trials. The trials would gather data about ongoing transitions from copper to fiber, from wireline to wireless, and from TDM to IP.

Watching White Space Spectrum

The FCC has made TV White Space available to unlicensed providers. This spectrum can be used for a variety of purposes, including broadband internet access in rural areas that might otherwise be un-served. The FCC has touched upon other applications such as broadband access to schools in rural areas, campus networks, home networks to support real time streaming video applications, remote sensing of water supplies and support for smart grid.
