The FCC released a preliminary list, by state, of the number of locations eligible for bidding in the upcoming Rural Digital Opportunity Fund auction.  In total, about 6 million rural homes and businesses could be eligible for bidding in Phase 1 of the auction.

U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and five House and Senate members have asked the FCC to do more to protect consumers from scammers who hijack phone numbers to hack bank accounts and other personal information.

The US House passed three bipartisan 5G security bills:   

  • H. Res. 575, expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that all stakeholders in the deployment of 5G communications infrastructure should carefully consider and adhere to the recommendation of "the Prague Proposals.  The resolution also encourages the President and federal agencies to promote trade and security policies on the international stage that are consistent with "The Prague Proposals." The bill passed by voice vote.

Country BroadbandUSDA Awards Rural Broadband Funding in North Dakota 

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced it had awarded $23 million in two high-speed broadband infrastructure projects that will create or improve rural e-Connectivity for 2,643 rural households and 78 businesses in North Dakota. This is one of many funding announcements in the first round of USDA’s ReConnect Pilot Program investments.

Governor Cuomo announced the 17th proposal of his 2020 State of the State Agenda - a comprehensive proposal to fight incessant robocalls or nuisance calls.  The legislation will require telecommunications companies to deploy technology that allows customers to block suspected robocalls.  As technology improves to identify and stop these nuisance calls, or robocallers try to find new ways to circumvent these efforts, telecom companies will be required to update their blocking technology to protect their consumers.  Read More

The Federal Trade Commission has issued its biennial report to Congress focusing on the use of the National Do Not Call (DNC) Registry by both consumers and businesses and other organizations over the past two years.   The report includes: 1) a summary of current Registry operations; 2) a summary of the impact on the Registry of new telecommunication technologies; and 3) a discussion of the impact of the established business relationship exception in the Commission’s enforcement efforts.

Somos announced the winning bidders in the first toll free number auction held in December 2019.  The 833 Auction bids raised $285,075 with 39 winning bidders winning a total of 1,659 Toll Free numbers. For winning bidders, the final payment deadline is January 8, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time (ET).
